Escape from Mauthausen

On the eve of his execution and weighing just 38 kg, Ukrainian college principal, Vasily Bunelik had nothing to lose on 26th April 1944 and ran off into the darkness pursued by his Nazi captors. By a series of fortuitous events he lived to tell the tale of his escape through Austria, Slovenia and Hungary and of his enslavement in Mauthausen Concentration Camp where at least 81000 other political prisoners from many countries perished. They never had the chance to tell their stories, Vasily Bunelik swore that their suffering should not be forgotten.
